Why Is Shadow Fading Lognormal?

چکیده
Received signal power in mobile wireless communications is often modelled as a product of three factors: distance-dependent average path loss, lognormal variation in the local mean power level (shadow fading), and small-scale fading due to movement in the order of a wavelength. Of these three factors, the least well understood is the shadow fading, the lognormality of which is usually explained as a result of multiplication of large number of random attenuating factors in the radio channel. This model is not credible from physical propagation point of view, and is also partly contradicted by measurements. In this paper, we propose an additive clusterbased model for shadow fading. We assume that the received signal is a superposition from several scattering clusters. It is shown that if the distribution of the local mean cluster powers satisfy certain mild statistical conditions, the shadow fading of the received signal will be approximately lognormal. We also present measurement results that support the theory.

A simple alternative to the lognormal model of shadow fading in terrestrial and satellite channels
The distribution of the local average power at the land mobile is widely accepted to be lognormal in both terrestrial and satellite channels. However, the mathematical form of the lognormal distribution is not convenient for analytic calculations. In this paper, we show the utility of the gamma distribution for shadow fading, in both terrestrial and satellite channels, using empirical data. Fur...
متن کاملOn the Utility of Gamma Pdf in Modeling Shadow Fading (slow Fading)
Shadow fading causes random fluctuations of the envelope mean at the mobile. The lognormal distribution is widely accepted for this phenomenon. In this paper we argue that, based on theoretical results and measured data, gamma distribution does the job as well. Then we show that by using the gamma distribution and in contrast with the use of the lognormal distribution, we can obtain easy-to-use...
متن کاملMinimum duration outages in Rayleigh fading channels
Minimum duration outages have been introduced in [1, 2] for lognormal shadow fading where the durations of signal fades were considered in evaluating outages. In this paper we develop and analyze such minimum duration outages for channels susceptible to Rayleigh fading. The results show that under typical Doppler frequencies the outages due to Rayleigh fading are more likely to cause frame or p...
متن کاملEnergy Detection of Unknown Signals over Composite multipath/shadowing Fading Channels
In this paper, the performance analysis of an energy detector is exploited over composite multipath/shadowing fading channels, which is modeled by Rayleigh-lognormal (RL) distribution. Based on an approximate channel model which was recently proposed by the author, the RL envelope probability density function (pdf) is approximated by a finite sum of weighted Rayleigh pdfs. Relying on this inter...
متن کاملAnalysis and Simulation of MRC Diversity Reception in Correlated Composite Nakagami-Lognormal Fading Channels
The physical meaning of the composite Nakagami-lognormal fading model is not well understood by many researchers using the model. The signal power transfer and transform at the interface between the global lognormal shadowing sub-channels and the local Nakagami multipath sub-channels in the presence of correlation between these diversity sub-channels is rather complex. This is the main reason w...
